I'd like to start off by thanking the 60 year old Thai ladies of the world for this dessert. With a vendor stall attached to a motorcycle with 2 kids on the back, somehow the Thai were able to make this incredibly unique and technique-heavy dessert. The Doughnut Bar have studied this age old vendor tradition and modernised it with Italian influences and confectionary favourites to bring you the most life changing ice cream that will have you screaming "DAAAAAAMMMNNN DANIEL" the entire 2016. *For ages 25 and over, see here for Damn Daniel video to avoid having a WTF-Is-He-Talking-About moment*
Not only is this shit fancy as hell, there's a lot that goes behind the scenes. That plate? Thats set to -20 degrees in order to instantly freeze the liquid gelato mix that is used as the ice-cream base. And no, they will not allow you to put your face on it, we get it, it's hot. Deal with it, you live in Straya. Traditionally in Thailand they combine all your mix ins (like Cold Rock) into the liquid layer however the flavours tend to get lost if you use too many mix ins. The Doughnut Bar have curated 3 flavours, which in my opinion are spot on. There's the Tiny Timmy Tella (tiny teddies, Tim Tams, Nutella), Vovoreo (raspberry, coconut, oreo) and Snickers (chocolate, smashed nuts, caramel).
Yes. You will get nostalgic and cry a little with the Vovoreo. I can't actually tell which one was my favourite... actually fuck it, Vovoreo was my favourite. The Vovo's biscuit always reminds me of the 90s... and then I remember Video Hits... and Backstreet Boys.... and Britney Spears... Crap. Having a mini meltdown, don't mind me.
The flavours are delicious and will be expanded and improved upon in the coming months but honestly, it's a welcomed new dessert by the people of Brisbane. I feel as if Brisbane is getting over the doughnut phase and it's looking for the next best invention on a classic, and who doesn't love ice-cream?! For $10 it may seem pricey but do be aware a) Girl, the rent is NOT cheap at Wintergarden, and b) This dessert costs $5 in Thailand, and it's THAILAND, land of the cheap! So, the pricing isn't too bad! And finally, The Doughnut Bar is the ONLY place in Queensland where you can get delicious ice-cream scrolls... until some little twits come and steal the idea and set up shop at Eat Street Markets. They can try to replicate, but they'll never duplicate. 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 #SMH #ComeOnPeople #HaveSomeOriginality
Overall, The Doughnut Bar have done an incredible job in keeping ahead of the dessert game in Brisbane. The official release was today and we can't stay away, we're coming in tomorrow to feast on another Vovoreo!
A big thank you to Leigh and The Doughnut Bar team for having us in, we can't wait to see what they'll do next!
